Haze Guide for Parents: How to Protect Babies and Toddlers in Puchong

Haze has a way of showing up quietly. One morning the sky looks grey, there is a faint smoky smell, and your little one starts coughing and rubbing their eyes. If you live or work around Puchong, you know the feeling. Here is what I have learned about getting through haze season with babies and toddlers, parent to parent.

Why Haze Affects Little Ones More

Haze is a mixture of airborne particles and gases, often from smoke. The part doctors worry about most is PM2.5, fine particles that measure 2.5 micrometres or less. They are small enough to travel deep into the lungs, not just irritate the nose.

Children are listed among the groups who may be more vulnerable. Babies and toddlers breathe faster than adults, so they take in more air for their size, and their airways are still developing. Kids with asthma or allergies may feel it first.

Know Your API Before the School Run

The Air Pollutant Index (API) is a number that tells you how clean or polluted the air is. The higher it is, the more you should cut down on time outdoors. Readings change through the day, so check the latest figure for your area on the Jabatan Alam Sekitar MyEQMS rather than relying on this morning’s reading.

  • 0 to 50 (Good): Normal activities are fine.
  • 51 to 100 (Moderate): Fine for most people, but keep an eye on sensitive children.
  • 101 to 200 (Unhealthy): Reduce long or energetic outdoor play.
  • 201 to 300 (Very unhealthy): Keep kids indoors as much as possible.
  • 301 and above (Hazardous): Follow official health advice.

5 Common Haze Symptoms and What They Look Like in Kids

  • Eye irritation: Stinging, redness or watery eyes. A toddler may rub their eyes a lot or turn away from bright light.
  • Runny or blocked nose: Fine particles irritate the nose, which can mean sneezing, extra mucus and noisy breathing, especially at night.
  • Cough and scratchy throat: One of the most common signs. Little ones cannot tell you their throat hurts, so watch for a dry cough, a hoarse cry or refusing food.
  • Chest tightness or wheezing: This deserves more attention than a mild cough. In young children it may look like fast breathing or a whistling sound.
  • Headache, tiredness or fussiness: These are not specific to haze, so do not blame the air for everything, but a cranky, tired child on a hazy day is worth watching.

Simple Haze Care Tips at Home

  • Keep windows closed on hazy days so polluted air does not drift inside.
  • Offer water or milk often. Fluids keep throats moist and help with a dry cough.
  • Avoid rubbing itchy eyes, and wash faces and hands after coming inside to remove particles on the skin.
  • Keep your home smoke-free, because cigarette smoke adds another layer of irritation.
  • Use an air purifier in the room where your child sleeps if you have one.
  • Move play indoors with blocks, colouring or sensory play so they still burn energy.
  • If your child has asthma, keep following the treatment plan from your doctor.

What About Masks for Kids?

A well-fitted respirator only protects if it seals snugly around the nose, cheeks and chin. The Sun’s haze guide (1 October 2026) points out that an adult-sized respirator may not seal properly on a child’s face. That is why keeping children indoors during heavy haze matters just as much as any mask. For babies and toddlers, please ask your doctor before trying one.

Go to a clinic if your child has wheezing, a cough that keeps getting worse, fast or laboured breathing, a fever that does not settle, or is feeding less than usual. Go straight away for chest pain, bluish lips or unusual drowsiness. If you are unsure, it is always fine to have your child checked. Our list of clinics near Bandar Puteri Puchong can help.

Keeping Little Ones Comfortable

Check the API, stay indoors when it is high, keep fluids up and watch for warning signs. Haze passes, and a few small habits make it easier on both of you.
